Why Spirit & Justice?Spirit & Justice was founded on the belief that all are created by God and that God’s Spirit dwells in all of God’s creation (1 Cor. 3:16-17). Knowing this in our hearts, we feel drawn to act when injustices limit the potential God has in mind for any of God’s beloved creation. We cannot remain silent and inactive.
But acting alone cannot create the change we wish to see in the world. God has created us in God’s own image as relational beings. It requires a community to sustain our resolve for change and to have enough power to make change. For those who benefit from the systems in place, we need to see the impact of those systems on people who are detrimentally affected because of our benefits. We need to build authentic relationships with people who are affected by injustice. For those who are marginalized, impoverished, or in any way negatively impacted by injustices in our community, relationships across lines builds the power necessary to affect change and the trust needed to sustain power. Our organization, Spirit & Justice, is grounded in spirituality. Foundational to spirituality is a belief in a power greater than ourselves. Some call this power God, some call this power love. It is a power that connects us all and makes us one. Spirituality recognizes that we are all connected. Companions in Spirit & Justice help each other to keep a deep awareness of our connectedness and to act in ways that build a more just community where all may reach the potential God has in mind.
